If you are looking for dates for the Cuxhaven fish market: there are none left. The Sunday market at the old fishing harbour is history – and because plenty of outdated date lists are still floating around online, an honest look at the current situation is worth your time.

The good news: you can still buy fresh fish in the region, just in different places and at different times. Here is what happened, and where to go instead.

What happened to the fish market

In mid-October 2025 the news came from the market's own profile: there will be no more fish market. After more than three decades, a piece of Cuxhaven market culture came to an end – and the announcement caused a fair amount of discussion online.

The reason lies not with the market but with the place. The old fishing harbour has been under redevelopment for years: the listed fish halls are being renovated, the quay wall was rebuilt from 2025 onwards, and further construction phases are to follow. The company redeveloping the site has made clear that no large-scale events can be planned on the outdoor areas for the next few years. From the operator's side it was also said that the ongoing renovation work makes it hard to look ahead and impossible to plan at present.

The door is not completely shut, though. The city of Cuxhaven has signalled that it is willing to talk about an alternative location and a possible new format. As of July 2026, however, no decision, date or venue is known. If something does move, the most reliable place to find it is the official events calendar – a better bet than the older date lists on travel portals.

What the market used to be like

If you knew it, you know what is missing: the fish market ran on Sundays from 9 am to 5 pm, right at the old fishing harbour. There was fresh fish, crustaceans and shellfish, fish rolls, snack and drink stalls – plus a flea market running alongside it, and a carousel and bouncy castle for children. That mix of fish, bric-a-brac and funfair was the real appeal.

One quirk had been in place for a while: the market was no longer held on many Sundays a year, but on just three dates. The reason is soberly legal – the Lower Saxony public holidays act allows a maximum of four exemptions per district for market events on Sundays and public holidays. Because the annual harbour festival is also classified as a market event and takes one of those exemptions, three were left for the fish market. So if you come across an older list with a dozen Sundays on it, you are looking at a snapshot from earlier years.

Where to buy fresh fish now

The market is gone, the fish is not. Three addresses worth planning around – two in Cuxhaven, one right in Otterndorf.

The Fischmeile at the fishing harbour

The Fischmeile is the obvious alternative: specialist fish shops, factory outlets, maritime souvenirs and restaurants along one stretch, with free access according to the official tourism site. Two things are worth knowing. First, the opening hours of the individual restaurants and fish shops vary – there is no shared trading time here. Second, because building work is going on at the harbour, routes, access roads and parking can change. A quick look at the website or a phone call beforehand saves you a wasted trip.

The weekly market in Cuxhaven

Independent of the harbour and considerably easier to plan: the weekly market. According to the city of Cuxhaven it usually takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at Beethovenallee 12, from the morning into the early afternoon. You will find the usual market range there, from fruit and vegetables to baked goods, and fish stalls are part of the picture too – if fish is the whole reason for your trip, it is worth asking the city or the tourist information office in advance who will be there that day. The exact starting time differs between the summer and winter half of the year, so check first if you want to be there early.

The Otterndorf weekly market

The most practical market if you are staying with us is just around the corner: the Otterndorf weekly market is held on Fridays from 08:00 to 12:30 on the Kirchplatz. According to the town of Otterndorf, the stalls sell fruit and vegetables, home-made meat and sausage products, poultry, eggs, flowers, honey, spices – and smoked fish. No funfair, no carousel, but a historic square and short distances. The Kirchplatz is closed to cars during market hours; in the town centre you park using a parking disc.

One tip worth noting: on public holidays, or when an event is being held on the Kirchplatz, the market moves to another day or is cancelled. If your stay falls on a bank holiday weekend, take a quick look at the town's events calendar.

Catching your own instead of buying it

There is one more option many people underestimate: in the Lower Saxony coastal waters around Cuxhaven you can fish without a fishing licence.
