Do you need a fishing licence?

The good news first: in Lower Saxony's coastal waters of the North Sea – and therefore also around Cuxhaven – you can fish without a fishing licence. Lower Saxony doesn't have a special tourist fishing permit, but the coastal waters are expressly exempt from the licence requirement. All you need is to be at least 14 years old and to carry valid ID.

A few things still apply: in harbours (e.g. in Cuxhaven) a separate permit from the harbour office may be needed, and closed seasons, minimum sizes and nature-protection rules must always be observed. Inland waters and rivers away from the coast are subject to the usual licence rules.

Which fish bite here?

The variety off Cuxhaven is impressive: cod, plaice, flounder, whiting, herring and mackerel feature regularly on the catch list, with the occasional sea bass, smelt, sea trout or garfish.

The best time for a fishing trip

To plan well, keep the season in mind: spring and autumn are the best time for cod, while the summer months June to August are peak season for mackerel. From late August the mackerel move on, so from then until mid-October fishing focuses more on cod again.

For almost all species except herring there's also a tide rule of thumb: it's most productive from the incoming tide to the start of the outgoing tide – a window of around six to seven hours.

Surf fishing from the beach

For an easy start, surf fishing straight from the beach is ideal. The wide sandy beaches around Sahlenburg are perfect for cod and plaice, especially when the tide is right. A simple bottom rig with lugworm or ragworm is plenty to begin with – specialist gear is only needed for more ambitious trips.

Cutter trip onto the open water

If you prefer to go bigger, book a cutter trip. One note first: classic deep-sea angling trips from Cuxhaven directly to the grounds off Helgoland are currently not offered due to changed EU rules for passenger vessels. But fishing cutters such as MS Freia or FK Albatros still run trips in the Elbe estuary and around Neuwerk, and the MS Najade also offers multi-day trips.

Day trips are usually in the region of 26–30 € per person – for current dates and exact prices it's worth asking the operator directly.

Our tip

For your first day's fishing, a simple surf-fishing set and a look at the tide calendar is all you need. If you want to go deeper, book a guided cutter trip – ideal for beginners and families too, as the crews usually bring the gear and the know-how.

Back to Nordseezimmer

After a day on the water it's only a short way back to Otterndorf: sort your catch, put your feet up and enjoy the view of the dyke – the perfect way to round off a day's fishing on the North Sea.
