Where the Medem flows into the Elbe, you'll find Otterndorf's harbour – set among the reeds of the dyke foreland, with an open view across the wide mouth of the Elbe towards the North Sea.
No quay cranes, no industry – just boats, water and wind. You don't need to travel far from Otterndorf for this view: the harbour sits on the edge of town, just minutes from Nordseezimmer, and is easy to reach on foot or by bike.

Where the Medem reaches the Elbe
The Town of Otterndorf describes its harbour's setting as sitting "in a sheltered spot among the reeds of the dyke foreland", with views over "the impressive expanse of the Elbe estuary". From here, you can see exactly what makes the North Sea coast what it is – the point where the river finally becomes the sea.
Access to the harbour is via the mouth of the Medem. Because the Elbe here is tidal, the water level – and the mood – shifts several times a day: at low tide the boats settle into soft mudflats, at high tide the water reaches almost up to the dyke. Even so, the harbour never dries out completely.
A harbour for around 190 boats – and for walkers
The marina has room for up to 190 boats, with about 30 berths reserved for visiting guests. Right on the dyke, the Ahoi restaurant welcomes you with a terrace and views over the Elbe. Just behind it – a short walk over the dyke – is the "Seglertreff" clubhouse, with a small kiosk plus showers and toilets, handy for sailors staying overnight before continuing their journey.
You don't need a boat of your own to visit: the path along the quayside is freely accessible. A short walk is all it takes to watch boats coming and going, or simply take in the view over the Elbe estuary. From here, it's around 1.5 kilometres into Otterndorf's historic half-timbered old town.
The harbour also serves as a starting point for sailors heading further via the Hadelner Kanal towards Bremerhaven and the Weser – part of what's known as the Elbe-Weser waterway.
24/7 self check-in, free Wi-Fi and your own parking space – Koje or Koi are waiting just minutes from the harbour.

A second maritime landmark belongs to Otterndorf: the Hadelner Kanalschleuse, the lock connecting the Hadelner Kanal to the Elbe. It does three jobs at once – draining the low-lying hinterland, handling shipping traffic, and protecting the coast against storm surges.
The mouth of the Medem was first diked and locked at this spot as far back as the late 14th century, making the site's lineage of predecessor structures roughly 600 years old. The current lock was completely rebuilt between 2019 and 2022, replacing the previous structure completed in 1853. It's operated by the state of Lower Saxony through the state water, coastal and nature conservation agency (NLWKN).
The harbour is at its best on a rising tide, when the boats float free again – or at sunset, when the light over the Elbe estuary turns gold. If you fancy combining it with a ride, the Elbe cycle path to Otterndorf runs right along the dyke.
Back to Nordseezimmer
After all that wind and open water, a quiet place to retreat does you good. At Nordseezimmer, either Koje or Koi is waiting with its own bathroom, a large bed and free Wi-Fi – self check-in included, in case your walk stretches into the evening, perhaps at a North Sea sunset.
