Mudflat Hiking for Beginners – What You Need to Know

On the mudflats you walk across the seabed while the sea itself waits just a few hours away. At low tide, the mudflats fall dry – and you walk on ground that will be back underwater a few hours later. Why you shouldn't go into the mudflats alone

The mudflats look calm – tidal channels, small runnels that barely stand out at low tide, fill quickly as the tide comes in and turn into fast-flowing water. The Wadden Sea National Park therefore advises: never go into the mudflats alone, and don't venture far without a mudflat guide. How the guided mudflat hike in Otterndorf works

The "Discover the Wadden Sea" tour starts at the Ankerplatz on Deichstraße; families can join a separate tour that starts at Naturstrand Kap Jakob. You're out with a mudflat guide for roughly 1.5 to 2 hours.

Adults pay €10.50, children aged 3 to 17 €7.00. Tickets are sold in advance only – there's no joining on the spot at the meeting point. Booking runs online via ADticket.de or by phone through the ticket hotline.

What to bring

Sturdy shoes or rubber boots belong on every mudflat hike, plus wind-resistant clothing in cooler weather. If you have sensitive feet, mudflat shoes work better than going barefoot. Bring something to drink too – that's what the organiser explicitly recommends.

Dry spare clothes back at your room are worth having as well: even walking carefully, you rarely come back completely clean.
