Day Trips From Otterndorf – 5 Places in Under an Hour

5 min read 20 August 2026

Five day-trip destinations around Otterndorf, each reachable by car in under an hour – from the landmark in Cuxhaven to a ferry crossing over the Elbe. If you're staying a few days at the Nordseezimmer, you don't have to spend every day on the beach: the region around the Elbe estuary has a natural history museum, a forest zoo, a big city on the water and a river crossing to offer.

Here are five day trips with the facts you need for planning: driving time, opening hours and what to expect once you're there. Each destination works as a half-day or full-day outing, without the drive itself eating up much of the day.

Cuxhaven – Kugelbake and Alte Liebe in about 20 minutes

Cuxhaven is about 18 kilometres away, roughly a 20-minute drive. The Kugelbake marks the end of the Elbe and the transition to the North Sea – the roughly 30-metre-high wooden sea mark stands right by the water.

Also in Cuxhaven is the Alte Liebe, a viewing platform directly on the Elbe shipping channel. What you'll see there, and the story behind the name, is in our own article on it.

Natureum Niederelbe – natural history museum in Balje

About 10 kilometres from Otterndorf, in Balje, is the Natureum Niederelbe. In the main season, 22 March to 1 November, it's open Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays, 10am to 6pm, with Mondays added in July and August. Adult admission is €11 in the main season and €9 in the off-season. Address: Neuenhof 8, 21730 Balje.

A good destination for a morning or afternoon, kids included – and at about 10 kilometres, the closest of these five day trips.

Wingster Waldzoo – animals, forest and walking trails

About 15 kilometres away is the Wingster Waldzoo, on the edge of the Wingst forest, directly on the B73 between Cuxhaven and Stade. It's open daily year-round: from 29 March to 24 October 2026, 9:30am to 6pm, last admission 5:15pm, with shorter hours outside that period.

Around it lies the Wingst forest with walking trails, plus the "Deutscher Olymp" lookout tower and a play park with a summer toboggan run – separate attractions in the village, not part of the zoo itself. A trip that can fill a whole day or be trimmed down to a few hours.

Bremerhaven Havenwelten – Klimahaus, Emigration House, Zoo am Meer

Bremerhaven, about 51 kilometres away with roughly a 32-minute drive, is the furthest destination on this list – and better suited to a full day out. Right on the water in the Havenwelten are the Klimahaus climate centre, the German Emigration House, and the Zoo am Meer – three separate venues with their own hours and admission prices.

If you're planning to see just one of the three, half a day is enough. For all three together, plan on a full day plus the drive back.

Wischhafen Elbe ferry – a trip across the water

A different kind of outing: from Wischhafen – about 35 kilometres, or a good half-hour, from Otterndorf according to route planners – the Elbe ferry crosses to Glückstadt on the opposite bank. The crossing takes roughly 20 to 25 minutes; the ferry runs year-round and daily, on a schedule of roughly every 30 minutes.

Cars, bicycles and pedestrians all travel on board, and there's catering available too. If you like, take a look around on the other side of the Elbe before heading back on the next crossing.

Our tip

Check the ferry timetable before you head towards Wischhafen: the Elbe ferry runs on a schedule, but the exact departure times are most reliably found straight from the operator at frs-elbfaehre.de. That way you won't wait around at the landing stage.

Back at the Nordseezimmer

For every one of these five day trips, you set off right from the Koje or Koi room – your own parking space, no detour via a train station. Both rooms have a private bathroom, a large 180×200 bed and free Wi-Fi, at no extra charge. For how best to get to Otterndorf yourself, whether by car, train or bike, see our article on getting to Otterndorf.

And when you're back from a day out and just want to arrive: self check-in via a key safe runs around the clock, and coffee is ready.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Cuxhaven from Otterndorf?

About 18 kilometres, roughly a 20-minute drive.

Are the stated driving times realistic?

They are benchmark figures from standard route planners without traffic. On sunny weekends with holiday traffic, journeys can take longer – allow a bit of buffer.

How often does the Wischhafen–Glückstadt Elbe ferry run?

According to operator FRS Elbfähre, it runs year-round, daily, on a schedule of roughly every 30 minutes. Check the current timetable directly before you set off, at frs-elbfaehre.de.

Can I reach these places without a car?

Cuxhaven is reachable without a car too – it's best to check current connections on the day. For the other four destinations a car is far more practical – easiest is to start right from your own parking space at the Nordseezimmer.

What should I watch for with opening hours?

Especially at Natureum Niederelbe: the main season runs 22 March to 1 November, open Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays, 10am to 6pm. Outside that period different hours apply – check natureum-niederelbe.de shortly before you go. Wingster Waldzoo, by contrast, is open daily year-round.
