Getting to Otterndorf – by Car, Train and Bike

Otterndorf sits where the Elbe meets the North Sea – not on a motorway, and that's by design. If you're finding your way here, you're coming on purpose, not passing through. Three routes get you here reliably: by car via the B73, by train straight into the town centre, or by bike on the Elbe cycle path.

Here's an overview of all three – with the routes the town itself recommends, and a few things that make the trip easier.

By car: via the B73

Otterndorf isn't on a motorway itself, but on the B73. The town names three approach routes, depending on where you're coming from:

• From Hamburg: A7 to the Hamburg-Heimfeld junction, then the B73 via Stade into Otterndorf.
• From Hanover: A7 to the Westenholz junction, switch to the A27 towards Bremerhaven, follow it to the end and turn onto the B73 towards Otterndorf.
• From Bremen/Osnabrück: A1 to the Bremer Kreuz interchange, then the A27 towards Bremerhaven, likewise to the end and on via the B73.

As a rough guide, it's about 130 kilometres from Hamburg. How long the drive actually takes depends a lot on traffic and roadworks on the day – it's always worth a quick check in your navigation app right before you set off. By train: the RE5

Otterndorf has its own station on the Niederelbebahn, the line between Hamburg-Harburg and Cuxhaven. It's served by the RE5 regional express, which runs hourly all the way to Hamburg Hbf. The line is only electrified as far as Stade; beyond that, diesel takes over, since the overhead wires stop there.

The line has so far been operated by Start Unterelbe. As of August 2026, Start has officially become part of DB Regio – timetables, tickets and season passes are unaffected. For the exact connection and arrival time, it's worth checking the DB Navigator app or bahn.de, since timetables can change over the course of a year.

Handy if you're travelling without a car: the town centre is within walking distance of the station.

By bike: two long-distance cycle routes nearby

Otterndorf sits near the Elbe cycle path (about 1.7 km from the main route) and the North Sea Coast Cycle Route, which runs along the North Sea coast through several countries. Both are flat and well maintained here – hardly any gradient to speak of.

Arriving without your own bike doesn't rule it out either: Otterndorf has bike rental options for guests. Since conditions on the route can change, it's worth checking the official Elbe cycle path page shortly before you set off.
