An old town straight out of a picture book

Stade's old town is small but exceptionally well preserved. Over cobblestones you stroll past colourful half-timbered houses, narrow lanes and the old Hanseatic harbour, which still has its historic wooden crane. Cafés and small shops line the harbour – perfect for an easy start to the day.

A few steps further stands the church of St Cosmae et Damiani with its famous Baroque organ (1668–1675) – a musical monument of national importance and worth a look inside.

Hanseatic history hands-on: the Schwedenspeicher museum

If you want to understand why Stade was once an important Hanseatic town, the Schwedenspeicher museum is the place to go. Housed in a historic warehouse, the region's history is told interactively – engaging for families with children, too.

From the water: boat tours & paddling

Stade sits on the river Schwinge, which flows into the Elbe – so the town looks lovely from the water. From the town harbour, tours depart on the museum ship „Greundiek" or the flat-bottomed boat „Tidenkieker". If you'd rather be active yourself, you can go SUP or canoeing on the Schwinge.

Getting there & parking

By car you're in Stade in around 59 minutes from Nordseezimmer (approx. 54 km). Often more relaxed is the train: hourly service, around 43 minutes – so you skip the parking hunt entirely.

If you come by car, park cheaply in the „Am Sande" underground car park or the „Wallstraße" multi-storey car park for a maximum of 5 € per day. Short-term parking right in the old town is free for the first 15 minutes, then 0.50 € per 15 minutes (max. 3 hours).

Insider tip

Plan the day cleverly: stroll the old town and see the harbour first, take a boat tour around midday, then head into the cool Schwedenspeicher museum when the sun is at its highest. Taking the train from Otterndorf keeps things relaxed and saves the parking hassle – and in the evening you head back to the sea.

Why the trip is worth it

Otterndorf and the North Sea stand for beach, mudflats and wide horizons. Stade is the perfect contrast: town history, half-timbering and maritime flair on the Elbe – easy to reach and ideal for a varied holiday day. Just right if you'd like to add a cultural day to your North Sea holiday.
